Huawei leading ICT Company, calls for a Robust Fiber Infrastructure to Accelerate Digital Development of the economy for an accelerated development.

The Global Vice President of Huawei, Mr. Edward Hou made the call during the 2nd edition of the flagship Mobile Technology for Development (MT4D 2021) conference which was organized by the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications and the Financial Inclusion Forum Africa.

Speaking at the virtual conference, Mr. Hou noted that, Fiber is the future proof technology that forms the foundation of all technologies and the need to improve fiber connectivity is imperative for the building of today’s and future networks. He said “The advantages of fiber cannot be overstated as it provides bigger bandwidth, lower latency and better reliability.” He added that a unified, resilient, scalable cloud [and fiber] infrastructure is an enabler that will allow delivery of infinite public services which will touch every sphere of public life, transforming public service delivery, enhancing operational efficiencies, improve data protection and cybersecurity whilst providing a platform for smart innovative solutions.

Mr. Hou however commended the government of Ghana for the digital transformation agenda and progress made in all sectors of the economy noting that the government’s efforts to consolidate most of its services is crucial for the next phase of the digital transformation agenda and hinted Huawei’s preparedness to use our global expertise and wealth of experience support Ghana in this regard.

Delivering the key note address on the theme: The Rise of Africa: Promoting Africa’s Sustainable Digital Ecosystem, the Vice President of Ghana, H.E Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who was the special guest of Honor highlighted Africa’s readiness for the 4th industrial revolution, citing Government’s digitalization initiatives in Ghana as a clear example of this. He also called on industry leaders stakeholders to support Government’s digitalization initiatives and commended the organizers and other sponsors of the MT4D Conference like Huawei for their support and investments in providing such platform for industry leaders to not only dialogue, but also serving as an avenue that has helped position Ghana as a major destination for global technology investors.

The Honorable Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs. Ursula Owusu –Ekuful in her speech said the Government continues to demonstrate the potential for public policy to drive and inspire digital transformation initiative to improve the lives of Ghanaians. She added that. Through the various agencies under the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, broadband connectivity and telephony is being expanded to rural parts of the country.” This is being made possible through Rural Telephony project which utilizes the Huawei RuralStar Solution which was jointly developed in partnership with the GIFEC under the auspices of the Ministry.

In the areas of policy development, Hon. Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful also reiterated Her Ministry’s commitment to developing digital policies for accelerated development. “We are in the process of revising our ICT for Accelerated Development Policy (ICT4AD) and [we] are developing the Ghana Digital Economy Policy which will [all] be subjected to extensive stakeholder consultations.” She added.

According the CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, Ing. Dr. Kenneth Edem Ashigbey, the MT4D 2021 Conference is an event that provides the platform for stakeholders within the financial, technology and development sector to converge at a single location to share ideas, exhibit solutions and take stock of innovations in payments, deposit, credit, remittance and insurance, and build partnerships for enhanced effort towards financial inclusion in Ghana.

The 2021 MT4D Conference is a two-day virtual event taking place on the 20th and 21st April 2021 and interested participants can register to experience it through mt4d.org. The event is also being streamed live on the official Facebook page of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications.
