As per the shareholders agreement, Millicom and Airtel have equal ownership and governance rights in the combined entity which has been rebranded as AirtelTigo.
AirtelTigo is the second largest Mobile Network Operator in Ghana with a combined customer base of approximately 10 million.
By integrating the two networks, the combined business is expected to provide Ghanaian customers with a major boost in both rural and urban network coverage – in turn translating into better voice quality, high speed data services and reinforced network stability and resilience. With the combined fibre footprint and increased data centres, enterprise customers including both, large corporations and SMEs, would have access to a diverse portfolio of world class solutions. Mobile Financial Services is also expected to be greatly enhanced with combined agent networks and platforms.
OUR POSITION ON CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (CSR)
Our mission is to produce an overall positive impact on society and our stakeholders, presently and for the future, by investment in communities to help fulfil their potential as well as their responsibilities to family and especially through education of underprivileged children.
We intend, through our CSR initiatives, to build and adopt under-privileged government schools, have better relation with the Community- the rural poor in particular, be responsive to the needs of our customers while continuously improving services innovatively and promptly.
Based on the basic guidelines and direction provided in the Corporate Responsibility policy, we have undertaken many community-based activities and programs in all countries we operate in. Some of the CSR initiatives we have undertaken in Ghana include:
Adoption of the Himakrom Methodist Primary School in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region under our Schools Adoption Programme. Airtel provided an improved learning environment for the students through the complete refurbishment of the school and the provision of the needed facilities to enhance academic performance and the overall success of the school.
The roll out of this educational project is based on the conviction that basic education (which is the foundation stage) must be made accessible and in good quality to every Ghanaian child irrespective of one’s social standing and location. This is a critical area in the development of quality human resource on which the country’s development mainly depends.
Airtel Rising Stars Football Tournament was initiated to provide a platform for upcoming soccer talents under the age of seventeen (17) to showcase their football skills to leading scouts and coaches so they can have an opportunity to further a career in football.
Conscious of the fact that there abound great talents at the grass root which, often times, go untapped, we introduced this programme with wide tentacles offering not only an opportunity for young ones across the country to fulfil their aspirations, rise to national prominence and subsequently earn a living but also to feed the national teams with fresh crop of talented youngsters capable of making the nation proud even on the international stage.
At the end of the tournament, six (6) teenagers were selected and are being groomed to become the future football stars in Ghana.
Support for charity homes like the Frafraha orphanage and Afia Clinics is also one of the diverse ways through which Airtel makes life more comfortable for the lowly-placed in society. More such social welfare institutions have been billed to benefit from similar interventions.
The re-launch of the ground breaking television series ‘Touching Lives’ to reward the unsung heroes who are contributing to society. The huge success of the first edition and the unending requests from the public for a rerun of the show are the reasons for its reintroduction.
We feel by publicly acknowledging and rewarding the efforts of these persons, not only are we empowering them to continue their good works, but we are also inspiring onlookers and Ghanaians in general to following suit so together we can make a better world to live in.
